2009 IIHF In-Line Senior World Championship Great Britain Trial UpdateIngolstadt, Germany 2009
After the first selection trial in mid-March 2009 the Great Britain IIHF In-Line Hockey Team are looking forward to seeing more new faces at the second selection trial on Sunday 26th April and are inviting prospective players to register and attend. With several roster slots open, this year is the perfect opportunity for more new faces than ever to break into the senior side that has experienced considerable success in recent years.
The second selection trial will be held on Sunday 26th April at Skate Central Sheffield from 5.00pm - 8.00pm with player sign in at 4.00pm. Players must be 16 or over in May 2009 and be of a very high standard. The trials are open but players must register beforehand by texting their name, date of birth and position to 07881923093 or by emailing david@gbhockey.net
Players can be from any discipline of inline or ice hockey but must be exceptional players and be able to play at the highest level of inline hockey. Notes:A £25 registration fee applies to all players trialing, though this covers both trials and subsequent team practices and is used to subsidise the costs of participation in the annual tournament.
The GB team is self-funded and all funding obtained through the year is used to subsidise the costs of participation. All players must be available to play from the 6th-14th of June 2009 when the World Championship tournament takes place. For more info on the GB team see www.gbhockey.net .
The official tournament website is at www.inlinewm.de A final team practice will also take place over the weekend of 16th and 17th May in Sheffield and players who are selected should also be available for this weekend. The expected final player cost of the tournament will be in the region of £300 per player and will apply to those individuals selected for the final roster.
The final price will include flights, full board and accommodation, transportation, team clothing, wheels, Professional Team Physiotherapist and Equipment Manager. www.gbhockey.net IIHF In-Line World ChampionshipsThe IIHF In-Line World Championships are organised by the International Ice Hockey Federation ( www.iihf.com ), the world's governing body for ice hockey, and the inline Championships have taken place annually since 1996 and is at an exceptionally high standard.
Featuring sixteen international teams from all over the world split into an Elite Division and Division One, the tournament is renowned as the one of the most well planned and most heavily sponsored in-line events in the world calendar.
Competing nations regularly line-up with players from the world of professional ice hockey as well as the cream of inline hockey players. The level of inline hockey on show is in some senses simply staggering. Even superstar players from North America 's Professional Ice Hockey League, the NHL have made appearances at the event including Edmonton Oiler and NHL All Star Ales Hemsky and future NHL stars from the North American Junior leagues.
Great Britain have won two gold medals in Division One of the tournament ranking 9th in the World in 2004 and 2006 and narrowly missed out on promotion to the elite division of eight in 2007 and 2008. In 2008 GB lost to Canada in the Division One final earning the silver medal narrowly missing out on promotion.
The British team Head Coach is former Ice Hockey professional and Great Britain Inline international Nick Crawley. Nick served as a professional ice hockey player for several seasons at the top levels of the British game. Crawley had been an Assistant Coach with the GB IIHF In-Line programme since 2003 and became Head Coach in 2008. Crawley helped GB to their first gold medal in Division One in 2004 and the bronze medal in 2005 and last year's silve medal.
Crawley boasts a strong domestic coaching record as a Head Coach. Since 1997 Crawley has served with several clubs including Heywood Hawks, Fallsworth Wildcats, Saddleworth Eagles, Walkden Cobras and the West Coast Wasps. His main involvement has been with the Macclesfield Meltdown where two BiSHA Championships have been won as well as making appearances in the European Cup and the Kaarst International tournament.
Under Crawley Meltdown also won a BIPHA Championship. For further information on the GB Team or tournament contact david@gbhockey.net . In the meantime we request you make the above information available to the talented players from your club or organisation and look forward to seeing some of them at the trial.
